Drug Description
Generic Rocephin is a disinfected, semisynthetic, broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic which is administered in the vein or muscle. It is a cephalosporin antibiotic. This drug hinders the creation of the bacteria's cell wall so that the wall breaks, that destroys the bacteria.
Drug Indications
Generic Rocephin is used only to treat or prevent infections that are caused by bacteria. These infections include infections of the lung, skin, abdomen, urinary tract, bone, joint, and lining of the brain (meningitis), also gonorrhea (a sexually transmitted infection).
Dosage and Administration
Generic Rocephin is administered by intravenously or intramuscularly.
Adults
For adult a daily dose of 1 to 2 grams given once a day (or in equally divided doses twice a day) has been recommended based on the type and harshness of infection. Patients can take total daily dose up to 4 grams.
The recommended dose for uncomplicated gonococcal infections is a single intramuscular dose of 250 mg. Patients with preoperative use (surgical prophylaxis) can take a single dose of 1 gram given intravenously 1/2 to 2 hours before surgery.
Treatment with Rocephin needs to be continued for at least 2 days after the signs and symptoms of infection appears. The duration of treatment can be increased to 14 days.
Infections that are caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, treatment should be maintained for at least 10 days.
Pediatric Patients
To treat
